PHILIPPE FORGET

Chamber Music

4 Vents d’Yver, pour deux violoncelles

Composer and conductor Philippe Forget composed a cycle of 4 virtuoso pieces for two cellos for the Vesterman / Langot duet on the initiative of painter Etienne Yver and in a similar fashion to Régis Campo and Nicolas Bacri. The commissioned pieces were based on the principle of ‘bartering’; the selected composers received a painting from the painter in exchange for a new piece for the duet. The first Vent d’Yver was created in Paris during the second season of the ‘Campus Formus’ concerts at the CRR of Paris auditorium in 2004. The complete cycle was played for the first time at the Promenades Musicales en Pays d’Auge in 2005.

REGIS CAMPO

“Autoportraits”

Régis Campo is often considered a playful composer on the French musical scene. His music contains rhythmic energy, vitality, and a sense of melody to which a certain dose of humour is added in a similar manner to French composers such as Janequin, Rameau, Couperin, Satie or Ravel.

From Régis’s and Patrick’s meeting came the duet ‘Les metronomes détraqués’, first performed and recorded with Agnès Vesterman following a commission by painter Etienne Yver based on the principle of bartering (a painting for a piece of music!)

Patrick also interprets two movements for cello and piano with Kanako Abe, a fiery Scherzo with Kanako and flautist Mihi Kim as well as a solo cello Fantasy.

CHARLES KOECHLIN
SONATE, QUINTETTE

Magnifique. ” – Musiqueclassique&co, août 2017

JOSEF SUK
Piano quintet op.8
ANTONIN DVOŘÁK
Piano quintet n°2 op.81

Sytnonia brings together two nearly contemporaneous Czech works: Antonín Dvorák’s famous quintet op. 81 and Joseph Suk’s quintet op. 8. This recording will help Suk’s quintet to gain notoriety, as it remains too little known. Perhaps it will manage to help it achieve the recognition it deserves in the repertoire of chamber music, and place it alongside Dvorák’s masterpiece, who was, let us not forget, Suk’s compatriot, his mentor and father-in-law.

The association of these two quintets will help generate appreciation of all the richness of Czech music at the beginning of the 20th century, which marries romantic traditions with folkloric influences, while looking forward to the musical perspectives of modernity.”

OLIVIER GREIF

“The Battle of Agincourt” Sonata for two cellos. String Quartet n°2 upon three sonnets of Shakespeare

‘A macabre dance, during the composition of which I often felt that the notes were falling under my pen like soldiers on a battlefield’. (extract of Olivier Greif’s diary, concerning ‘The Battle’)

Greif’s creative freedom and musical eclecticism fascinated Patrick Langot and his ensemble. ‘La Bataille d’Agincourt’ for two cellos is built on Anglican quotes from the 14th century, a chaconne, a song from the Ghetto of Warsaw and draws inspiration from a ballad by Keats. Out all this material are created open and singular works that are emotionally overwhelming and spiritually elevating.

The excellent Alain Buet sings Shakespearean sonnets on the theme of fleeting time in the second quartet. The Patrick Langot and Agnès Vesterman duet brings to life the other meditation on death (from the battle of Agincourt (1415) to the Warsaw Ghetto).

ROBERT SCHUMANN

Piano Quintet op.44

CÉSAR FRANCK

Piano Quintet in f minor

Syntonia’s first album of piano quintets was awarded the Diapason ‘Découverte’ prize and was given 4 stars by the Monde de la Musique. It is still regularly played on France Musique today. The program ‘La Tribune des critiques’ named their interpretation of Franck the ‘Definitive version’ in 2010.

‘Of course it is impossible to forget the performances of Serkin with the Budapest, Rösel at the Gewandhaus Quartet, Argerich and his friends at the Schwarzberg, Hall, Imai, and Maisky in Schuman or of Richter and the Borodines, Catherine Collard and the Orlandos or even Levinas and the Ludwig in Franck: but these newcomers can be compared to them, especially since the (unheard of) coupling is deeply revealing of the most passionate side of musical romanticism’ Diapason, September 2010.

JACQUES BOISGALLAIS

Chamber Music

String Quartet n°1

Jacques Boisgallais claims to express through music ‘the variations of an inner life where classicism and romanticism are no longer in opposition, but, in fact, work together hand in hand. Jacques Boisgallais mastery is therefore in bringing together opposites.

The Ensemble Syntonia met the composer and performed his quartet during the Cantus Formus season of concerts, on the initiative of Nicolas Bacri at the CRR of Paris on the 2nd of February 2005. A record of this unique concert, the disc also includes the Sonata for piano and violin 1, the Toccata for 2 pianos, the Trio and the Divertimento for quartet and clarinet.

OLIVIER GREIF

String Quartet n°4 “ULYSSES”

‘Fathomless despair, unbridled joy and depth of expression are pushed to instrumental limits by the Syntonia Ensemble’.

Gérard Condé, Diapason, May 2010

‘A great quartet of our time! The Ensemble Syntonia, as creator of the work and clearly in a state of grace, provides a beautiful interpretation.’

Répertoire (R10)

Two months before Olivier Greif’s death, Syntonia performed his 4th and last titanic quartet during the Rencontres de La Prée. Two years later, they recorded the work under Triton, a music label that pioneered his music. The disc was warmly received by the press and provided a defining moment in the career of the young ensemble.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
“Une Cantate Imaginaire”
NATHALIE STUTZMANN – ORFEO 55

ANTONIO VIVALDI

“Prima Donna”

NATHALIE STUTZMANN – ORFEO 55

Considered one of the few authentic counter-altos of our time, the singer Nathalie Stutzmann spends part of her career conducting, which she studied under two great masters: Jorma Panula (who trained Sir Simon Rattle) and Seiji Ozawa. Devoted to Antonio Vivaldi, Prima Donna is the first record featuring Nathalie Stutzmann as singer and conductor.

At the time when people were acclaiming castrati, Vivaldi, the nonconformist, preferred the timbre of female counter-altos, to whom he gave centre stage in his operas. In Prima Donna, Nathalie Stutzmann brilliantly illustrates this historical originality by assembling the most beautiful arias, whether famous or never previously performed, that Vivaldi composed for these cherished singers. Nathalie Stutzman leads Orfeo 55 with the musical rigor, the expressive freedom and emotional intensity for which she is renowned.

NICOLA PORPORA
“Vespro per la festivita dell’assunta”
LE PARLEMENT DE MUSIQUE
MARTIN GESTER

» – Diapason, avril 2102

PHILIPPE JAROUSSKY – “HEROES”

ENSEMBLE MATHEUS – JEAN-CHRISTOPHE SPINOSI

Inspired by il Prete rosso, the performer Philippe Jaroussky wished to devote this recital to the opera arias of Vivaldi, whose role in lyrical music is constantly being reaffirmed. The countertenor provides an anthology of thirteen arias –performed for the most part for the first time – taken from eleven operas. A number are now among the most well-known by Vivaldi, such as Ottone in villa, Tito Manlio, Il Gustino or Orlando furioso, whereas Andromeda lerata, a work recently discovered in Venice (2002) and hypothetically attributed to Vivaldi – only the aria interpreted by Philippe Jaroussky is attributed with any degree of certainty – or even Tieteberga, whose ensemble score has been lost, reveal part of the searching repertoire. It represents a significant contribution to Vivaldian opera, and equally a decisive step in the young and flamboyant career of Philippe Jaroussky.

“GRISELDA” – ENSEMBLE MATHEUS

JEAN-CHRISTOPHE SPINOSI

Dramma per musica in tre atti – Libretto di Apostolo Zeno Teatro S. Samuele, Venezia, 1735.

Created in 1735 at the most prestigious theatre in Venice, Griselda is the opera of apotheoses. In this mature work, whose libretto was rewritten by Goldoni, Vivaldi is reconciled with the singer Anna Giro, his most famous pupil, and both set about conquering the Venetian elite. In this context, the story of the queen Griselda, who is hated by her subjects because of her humble origins, but who wins their love and trust through courage and endurance, is particularly resonant.

RÉGIS CAMPO
“POP ART”

‘I often compose in allegro, in scherzo, in allego vivace’, proclaims Régis Campo, almost tongue in cheek. Should musical good cheer be banished? Régis Campo, sweeps this idea away with a gesture, he has decided to be at the heart of happiness, he composes his happiness, in search of music freed from gravity.

The first collaboration between Régis Campo, Kanako Abe (conducting) and Patrick Langot ‘Pop-Art’ takes the same set-up as ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ by Schoenberg, and requires precise instrumental execution and flawless technique to serve energised music that flirts with noise, devoid of any warmth, without ever falling into the trap of gratuitous effects.
